How to travel on a budget: 5 best tips for cheap travel

We are often asked how we are able to travel so much. The answer is….we ALWAYS travel on a deal! We never book full price…ever! From flights to accommodation and everything in between…we love to find a deal. Here I’ll share with you how we travel on a budget: 5 best tips for cheap travel.

We’re always on the lookout for an awesome deal. Quite often, we don’t even know where our next holiday will be! We find an awesome deal and we jump on it.

1. Find the best deal on flights

Consider travelling in the off-peak season which is when you will save the most money. Keep an eye out for the Jetstar Friday Fare Frenzy sale by signing up to their emails. When we travelled to Bali, we snagged an amazing deal where kids flew and stayed free, saving us a ton of cash. You can also often find a combination deal with flights and accommodation that can’t be passed up.

2. Plan and pack properly

Who wants to spend time while on your holiday wasting time shopping for various items that you forgot?! Not me! Prepare for your trip properly by writing a list well in advance. Make sure you pack everything you might need for your trip. This will save you time and money

3. Secure an accommodation deal

Accommodation can be a costly part of your holiday. We always shop around for a good price and make sure we book well in advance so there are plenty of options to choose from. We often opt for staying in Airbnbs and save a significant amount to spend on other parts of our trip. You should also consider checking out booking.com and lastminute.com which have great deals on accommodation and other elements of your trip. I think it’s important to note that just because you choose to travel on a budget, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out! We always stay in comfortable places, we just don’t pay a fortune.

4. Reduce your food expenses

Next to flights and accommodation, food while you’re travelling would have to be the next most expensive factor. Depending on the type of trip we take, we always do a grocery shop when we first arrive and buy breakfast supplies, snacks and fruit for the whole trip.

When we travel, we make our own breakfasts (when not included in our accommodation price) and generally only eat one meal out per day. This of course changes depending on the circumstances, however, as a general rule this is what we work on. We love a picnic lunch where we can take in our beautiful surroundings.

When it comes to eating out, we love using Groupon or other deal sites. We often find some amazing deals for expensive restaurants, or even cuisines we’ve never tried. Ethan loved our Teppanyaki experience on our recent trip to Queensland! If we don’t find a restaurant deal, we find it’s cheaper to find a place to eat off the beaten track.

5. Walk the pavement

The best and cheapest way to see a city is to walk it. We also love to stay fit while travelling, so this is another advantage. If you don’t feel like walking, you could also hire a bike which is generally pretty cheap and a fun way to see places. Otherwise, get to know the public transport in the area as this is another good option to keep costs down. So what are you waiting for…put on those running shoes and explore!
